Quick Overview

The Grand Adventures of ’34 and ‘35
by Henry J. Zielinski

Lovingly transcribed from the memoirs of Henry J. Zielinski, The Grand Adventures presents mid-1930s America from the perspective of four young men on an ambitious road trip: from Buffalo, New York, to the Grand Canyon and back—twice. A nostalgic treat, The Grand Adventures takes readers back to a time when four friends could embark on a cross-country trip with just $140 between them and return home with $8.20 to spare.

Product Description

Zielinski is a meticulous chronicler who records everything from the cost of gasoline (less than 20 cents a gallon) to the fee for a night’s lodging ($3). His deadpan wit makes even the most mundane travel moments entertaining. For example, to describe a particularly unpalatable meal, Zielinski remarks, “The can must have lain on the grocer’s shelf for years because there wasn’t even a suspicion of a taste in the peaches.” Later, when some parents prevent a gaggle of hometown girls from stepping out with him and the boys, Zielinski quips, “Their attitude could not be blamed since we were total strangers and there was no telling how desperate in character we might be.” Filled with flat tires, farm chores, foul weather, and friendship, The Grand Adventures is five thousand miles of good ol’ fashioned fun.
